Co-occurring Conditions
Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Dual Diagnosis Treatment
At JRV Recovery, we recognize that many people struggle with both substance use and co-occurring disorders and mental health challenges. Our integrated dual diagnosis treatment is designed to address these intertwined issues in a unified, comprehensive plan.
What Is Dual Diagnosis?
Dual Diagnosis occurs when a substance use disorder exists alongside a mental health condition. For many, the pain of depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, or post-traumatic stress can lead to self-medicating with drugs or alcohol. Over time, this pattern creates a cycle in which the substance use worsens mental health symptoms, and the emotional challenges, in turn, drive further substance misuse.
This interplay can have profound effects on every aspect of life. Chronic substance use may impair cognitive function, damage physical health, and strain personal relationships, while untreated mental health issues can reduce your ability to cope with everyday stress. The longer these conditions persist without coordinated treatment, the more deeply they can impact your overall well-being and stability. Recognizing these challenges early is essential for breaking the cycle and establishing a strong foundation for lasting recovery.
Common Co-Occurring Disorders
At JRV Recovery, our integrated approach is designed to address a wide range of mental health conditions in tandem with addiction. We routinely work with clients experiencing the following common co-occurring disorders:
- Major Depressive Disorder: Persistent low mood, loss of interest, and feelings of hopelessness.
- Generalized Anxiety Disorder: Excessive worry and tension that interfere with daily functioning.
- Bipolar Disorder: Fluctuations between elevated mood and depressive lows that complicate stability.
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): Distressing symptoms triggered by past trauma that fuel substance use.
- Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): Difficulties with focus and impulse control that contribute to risky behaviors.
The Dual Diagnosis Cycle
The dual diagnosis cycle describes how mental health challenges and substance use disorders feed into one another. For example, feelings of overwhelming sadness or anxiety may lead you to use drugs or alcohol in an attempt to alleviate emotional pain. However, continued substance use can further disturb your mood, increase stress, and even lead to new mental health symptoms. This cycle creates a self-perpetuating loop where neither condition is effectively managed. Our integrated approach aims to disrupt this cycle by treating both conditions simultaneously, giving you the tools to achieve balance and regain control over your life.
Our Integrated Treatment Approach to Addiction and Mental Health
At JRV Recovery, every aspect of your addiction and mental health treatment is coordinated under one unified plan. We begin with an in-depth evaluation that examines your substance use, emotional well-being, and physical health. This comprehensive assessment guides the creation of a personalized treatment plan tailored specifically to your needs. Our approach includes:
Targeted Counseling and Psychotherapy:
We use evidence-based techniques—such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), motivational interviewing (MI), trauma-informed care, psychoeducation, and mindfulness practices—to help you identify triggers, manage cravings, and develop healthier coping strategies. Our therapists work closely with you to break the patterns that fuel the dual diagnosis cycle.
Interactive Group Sessions:
Structured group therapies provide a safe space to share your experiences and learn practical skills from others facing similar challenges. These sessions build mutual support and reinforce the techniques learned in individual therapy.
Relapse Prevention Planning:
We offer clear, actionable strategies to identify early warning signs and manage setbacks. This proactive planning is essential to sustaining progress and keeping you on track.
Regular Medical and Psychiatric Monitoring:
Frequent check-ins help us monitor any physical or emotional changes. This ongoing oversight allows for timely adjustments to your treatment plan to ensure both your substance use and mental health concerns are managed effectively.
Skill-Building Workshops:
Practical exercises in stress management, communication, and problem-solving equip you with the everyday tools needed for challenges without resorting to substance use.
Family and Community Engagement:
Involving your support network is a key part of our approach. We work with family members and utilize local resources in Orange County to create a supportive environment that reinforces your recovery.
Our Dual Diagnosis Treatment Center Options
Our dual diagnosis treatment center offers integrated care through two treatment levels:
In PHP, you spend several hours each day in a structured, intensive treatment setting, attending therapy, counseling, and skill-building sessions multiple days per week before returning home in the late afternoon or evening. This program is ideal if you need close, daily clinical support to manage severe withdrawal symptoms or significant mental health challenges, or if you are transitioning from a higher level of care. PHP provides a controlled environment during the day to work intensively on recovery skills and break the dual diagnosis cycle.
IOP offers a flexible treatment option for those who are stable enough to benefit from fewer clinical hours while still requiring regular therapeutic support. In IOP, you participate in structured sessions several times a week that include group therapy, individual counseling, and interactive workshops. This model allows you to integrate new strategies into your daily routine and maintain progress through continuous feedback, making it an excellent choice for sustained recovery while managing work, school, or family responsibilities.
